July 19 – Auto Buying Seminar, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Enterprise Car Sales will be discussing auto buying tips as well as giving a hands on
demonstration on what to look for when purchasing a used vehicle. The seminar will
take place at MAFCU's Germantown Headquarters at 12820 Wisteria Dr. and lunch

Aug 20 – Annual Meeting, 6 p.m.
The Election of MAFCU Board of Directors will take place during our Annual
Meeting on August 20 in the Community Room of our headquarters building
(12820 Wisteria Dr., Germantown, MD 20874).
The slate of candidates is listed below. Nominations may also be made by a petition
signed by 20 members or 1% of the membership (currently 21, 466); whichever
is greater, and filed with the secretary of the board by July 11. Petitions should be
mailed to the address listed above. There will be no nominations from the floor.

newest Board Member."
Candidates for board of directors:
John G. Boothe has served on the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit
Union Board of Directors for the past 24 years. He currently
holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Board, and chairs the
Supervisory Committee. Mr. Boothe is retired from the IBM
Corporation and the Lockheed Martin Corporation. Mr. Boothe
taught, part time, at Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA,
for five years following his retirement from his aerospace career.
He holds an undergraduate business degree and an MBA from
West Virginia University.
Barbara Kawamura has served on the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit
Union Board of Directors for the past 17 years. She currently holds
the position of Secretary of the Board and is a member of the
Management Committee. Ms. Kawamura was a member of the
Supervisory Committee for five years prior to becoming a Board
member. She worked for IBM for 11 years and is now employed by
Rockville Nursery School and Kindergarten in Rockville, MD. Ms.
Kawamura has a B.S. from the University of Maryland, College Park,
in Information Systems Management. She is active in her church
and in Rockville civic groups.
W. R. Poffenberger has served on the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit
Union Board of Directors for the past 28 years. He currently serves
on the Management Committee and previously served as Secretary
for many years. Mr. Poffenberger is retired from IBM and Lockheed
Martin Corporation with over 35 years of Program and Configuration
Management with Lockheed Martin/Loral/IBM. His positions have
included Program Management, Configuration Management, and
Plans and Controls. Mr. Poffenberger attended Hagerstown College
and the University of Maryland.
Carol Rieg was appointed to the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union
Board of Directors on March 31, 2008. She served on MAFCU's
Supervisory Committee for the past six months. Ms. Rieg is a
resident of Montgomery County, MD, and is President of Rieg and
Associates, a government-relations and public-relations firm. She is
also a member of the Gaithersburg Board of Appeals and a board
member for the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce.
She served as a Member of the Maryland Transportation Authority
from 2005 – 2007. Ms. Rieg earned her bachelor's degree from
Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Charles W. Thomas has served on the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit
Union Board of Directors for the past 28 years. Mr. Thomas also
served as President/CEO of Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union for
32 years, retiring at the end of 2007. Mr. Thomas has served on the
board of the Alliance of Credit Unions (formerly the league of IBM
Credit Unions) and LICU Corporate FCU for 19 years and has been
the President of LICU+ since 1990. He holds a B.S. in Business
Management and has completed the CUNA/California League
Executive Development Program at Stanford University. He has
also completed the CUES Advanced Leadership Institute at Harvard
Business School and is a board member for the National Association
of Federal Credit Unions.
